Child # 2 – Sarah Jane Stoneman

Sarah was married and widowed twice. It seems that she married brothers – John and then William Carlyon.  She came to the United States in 1897, first living in Arizona and then California. Her sister, Beatrice also immigrated to Arizona, but she didn’t come until 1901. I wonder if  Sarah came to the United States by herself or if she and her brother-in-law William Clayton came together?

My mother never talked of  these great-aunts. Too bad that we didn’t know more about them.  I wonder if we saw a picture of them that they would look like my great-grandma Mary Ann.

I was able to find Sarah in the California Death index which gave her birth date, 6 Oct 1866 and her death date, 15 Jan 1948.

Then I found her obituary online:

Sarah Jane Carlyon, 81, or 1525 East 56th Street, died yesterday in a local hospital. She was a native of England and came to the United States 50 years ago. She moved to Long Beach 26 years ago from Globe, Arizona and was a member of the Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sons, William and Thomas of Long Beach; six sister, including Mrs. Beatrice Richards of Bellflower and a brother.
