Child #4 – Anna Matilda Stoneman

The first time I started researching Anna, or Annie as I’ve come to know her, was when I found her listed as a surviving sister in the obituary of Mary Ann. I was a bit confused because it says her name is Mrs. Annie Stoneman. But I thought if she’s a sister and she is a Mrs., she would have a different last name. So my first thought was that she is a sister-in-law. So I looked in the 1930 Census in Negaunee and sure enough, she is there as Annie Stoneman. But she has a son living with her with the last name of Kent. Then I found her in the 1920 Census as Anna Kent and she is divorced.  I think it is interesting that she lived in the next town to where I grew up and I never heard my mom even mention her or her family.  Here is all I’ve found on her and her family:

Birth Index of England – 1st quarter, 1871, Anna Matilda Stoneman

1871 Census of England – Anna M. 3 mo. old

Marriage Index of England – 4th quarter, 1890 Anna Matilda Stoneman and William Henry Kent

1891 Census of England – Annie Matilda Kent, age 20 , wife of William H. Kent

1901 Census of England – Annie M. Kent, age 30, married and head of household, one child Cecil A. Kent, age 9

1910  U.S. Census – Negaunee, Michigan – Annie Kent, age 39, head of household, married, four children living with her: Cecil Kent, age 18; Albert Kent, age 15; Arthur Kent, age 2 1/2; Fernley Kent, age 2 months.

1920 U.S. Census – Negaunee, Michigan – Anno M. Kent, age 48, head of household, divorced, immigrated in 1907, two children living with her: Edvin A. Kent, age 12 and Fernley Kent, age 9

1930 U.S. Census – Negaunee, Michigan – Annie Stoneman, age 58, head of household, one child living with her: Fernly Kent, age 20.
