Child #4 – Anna Matilda Stoneman

The first time I started researching Anna, or Annie as I’ve come to know her, was when I found her listed as a surviving sister in the obituary of Mary Ann. I was a bit confused because it says her name is Mrs. Annie Stoneman. But I thought if she’s a sister and she is a Mrs., she would have a different last name. So my first thought was that she is a sister-in-law. So I looked in the 1930 Census in Negaunee and sure enough, she is there as Annie Stoneman. But she has a son living with her with the last name of Kent. Then I found her in the 1920 Census as Anna Kent and she is divorced.  I think it is interesting that she lived in the next town to where I grew up and I never heard my mom even mention her or her family.  Here is all I’ve found on her and her family:

Birth Index of England – 1st quarter, 1871, Anna Matilda Stoneman

1871 Census of England – Anna M. 3 mo. old

Marriage Index of England – 4th quarter, 1890 Anna Matilda Stoneman and William Henry Kent

1891 Census of England – Annie Matilda Kent, age 20 , wife of William H. Kent

1901 Census of England – Annie M. Kent, age 30, married and head of household, one child Cecil A. Kent, age 9

1910  U.S. Census – Negaunee, Michigan – Annie Kent, age 39, head of household, married, four children living with her: Cecil Kent, age 18; Albert Kent, age 15; Arthur Kent, age 2 1/2; Fernley Kent, age 2 months.

1920 U.S. Census – Negaunee, Michigan – Anno M. Kent, age 48, head of household, divorced, immigrated in 1907, two children living with her: Edvin A. Kent, age 12 and Fernley Kent, age 9

1930 U.S. Census – Negaunee, Michigan – Annie Stoneman, age 58, head of household, one child living with her: Fernly Kent, age 20.

Child #3 Mary Ann Harriet Stoneman

This is my Great-grandma Mary Ann that my mother spoke of often. I have already included several pictures and info about her in other posts.  This picture was taken by my dad, Jack Williams, as an assignment when he was in photography school.

I found her in each of the following census in Illogan, Cornwall, England:

Each of them states she was born in Illogan.

1871 – age 2

1881 – age 11

1891 – age 21

This is not an official  Marriage Certificate, but the one most likely filled out by the minister who performed the marriage.

I found her in each of the following census in Michigan:

1900 – age 30, immigrated in 1893, residence – Snow Street

1910 – age 40, residence – Barn Street

1920 – age 50, residence says it is Man Street, but I think it is an error because there are listings on the same page for Barn Street.

1930 – age 60, residence is 316 Barn Street. She has her daughter Hilda, who is a widow, and her two children, Thomas and Ruth, living with them.

Obituary, dated March 17, 1947

Her Death Certificate has an error. Her mother’s maiden name is really Mary Ann Harriet Richards. Her grandmother’s maiden name is Eliza Jeffery.

Child # 2 – Sarah Jane Stoneman

Sarah was married and widowed twice. It seems that she married brothers – John and then William Carlyon.  She came to the United States in 1897, first living in Arizona and then California. Her sister, Beatrice also immigrated to Arizona, but she didn’t come until 1901. I wonder if  Sarah came to the United States by herself or if she and her brother-in-law William Clayton came together?

My mother never talked of  these great-aunts. Too bad that we didn’t know more about them.  I wonder if we saw a picture of them that they would look like my great-grandma Mary Ann.

Birth Index of England – qtr. December 1866

The obituary for my great- grandmother in March of 1947  lists Mrs. Sara Carlyon of Long Beach, California as a surviving sister.

1930 Census of Long Beach, California

Her son William is living with her.

California Death Index:

I was able to find Sarah in the California Death index which gave her birth date, 6 Oct 1866 and her death date, 15 Jan 1948.

Then I found her obituary online:

Sarah Jane Carlyon, 81, or 1525 East 56th Street, died yesterday in a local hospital. She was a native of England and came to the United States 50 years ago. She moved to Long Beach 26 years ago from Globe, Arizona and was a member of the Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sons, William and Thomas of Long Beach; six sister, including Mrs. Beatrice Richards of Bellflower and a brother.
Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Mottrell's Chapel with Rev. E. Clayton Burgess officiating. Interment will be in Sunnyside Memorial Park.

Then I started looking for her in Arizona.

This is all I’ve been able to find on Catherine Stoneman.

The Family Record of Mary Ann as a child

My great-grandmother, Mary Ann Harriet Stoneman was born and raised in the Redruth area of Cornwall, England.  She was the 3rd child in the family of 12 children. As you can see, her mother died when the youngest child was born.  Then her father died just 5 years later. I started wondering what happened to the little girl, Millicent. I began looking for information about little Millicent and all of the other siblings. Hopefully, seeing the family all together on this group record will help you to keep straight who everyone is and how they fit into the family. I will do one post for each child.

Laura and her sister Millie - photo

Laura & Millie

Laura’s mom – Mary Ann Harriet Stoneman

My mother named me after her grandmother.  All the while I was growing up, she made comments about Grandma Mary Ann – that I had long fingers like she did and this certain piece of furniture belonged to her.  She said that her mother, Laura, was sick when her children were small and that Grandma Mary Ann took care of them a lot. So my mom knew her Grandma Mary Ann very well and spoke highly of her. I knew while growing up that my great-grandma Mary Ann was a good person.George and Mary Williams

Laura’s Death Certificate and Funeral Program

I remember visiting Grandma when she was in bed before she died.   I climbed up the steep skinny stairs to her bedroom.  I don’t think I stayed long, but I remember her smiling at me and the twinkle in her eye.

This is obviously not an original, but it is  the one that my mom most likely got at the Marquette County Courthouse in 1979.

Memories of my Grandma

Waters 40th

40th Wedding Anniversary of Gordon and Laura Waters

September 14, 1961

I have such fond memories of my Grandma Waters.  She passed away when I was 11 years old, but the twinkle in her eye when she looked at me remains with me today.  I knew that she loved me.   She was kind and gentle and I remember that she fed us well.  Her house had an old pot belly stove in the kitchen.  And I remember asking my mom why Grandma’s big spoons had a side worn away on  them.  She told me it was because Grandma stirred the batter so hard. I remember some blue flannel pajamas that she made for me one Christmas. Maybe she made pajamas every Christmas, but I specifically remember this one that had a big ruffle around the bottom of the pant legs. She was an excellent seamstress and made many many clothes for my Barbie doll, which I still have today. The sweetest thing she sewed for me, though, was one Christmas when I was a little girl, all I asked for and wanted was a wedding dress.  I remember being with all my cousins on Christmas Eve and all the presents were opened and then Grandpa reached up on top of the piano and said there was one more present.  It was in a big box and it was for me!  It was my very own wedding dress – just my size with a veil, too.  I was so excited!  I don’t know why at such a young age that I was already dreaming about being a bride and having a beautiful wedding dress. I don’t have any recollections of wearing the dress or playing with it.  But I can picture so clearly getting that present on Christmas Eve.
